Accurate determination of left ventricular volumes with gated blood pool studies using a direct measurement of photon attenuation

  • 1. University of California, Los Angeles, CA (USA)

Description

Scintigraphic measurement of left ventricular volumes is compromised by photon attenuation by tissue surrounding the heart. To overcome this problem, a technique is developed for direct measurement of the attenuation, which allows correction of volume determination obtained by the count method from equilibrium blood pool studies. The results show attenuation can be measured and accurate scintigraphic left ventricular volume estimates be derived provided individual correction for photon attenuation has been made
