Signals of W+- and Z0 productions in hadronic collisions as predicted by QCD perturbation

Description
We point out that the observation of high psub(T) charged lepton μ+- in high energy pp, antipp collisions can provide a clean way for detecting W+- and Z0 including the determination of their masses. The calculations are done within the Weinberg-Salam model using the generalization of Drell-Yan formula for W+-, Z0 production to first order in quark-gluon couplings in the asymptotically free quantum chromodynamics. We present the expressions and curves for various differential cross sections in reactions pp, anti pp→W++X (W+→μ+ν); pp, anti pp→W+jet+X (W+→μ+ν) and pp, anti pp→(Z0,γ)+X ((Z0,γ)→μ+μ-) for c.m. energy range √s=100-800 GeV. Different forms for scale violation of the structure functions are incorporated and compared with the case when they are absent. Implications of the results for the detection of intermediate vector bosons W+- and Z0 are discussed. (author)
