Description
Short-duration, high intensity pulsed ion beams (HIPIBs) can reach an energy density sufficient to melt the near-surface layer of any solid material. In this paper the Ionotron and Plasma Focus facilities producing HIPIBs are described, which have been used in surface experiments carried out in Poland. Experiments illustrating the surface modification of semiconductors, metals and ceramics are reviewed. (orig.)
