Laser processed zirconium: Study of corrosion and microstructure

Description
Zirconium alloys have been laser processed with a 10 kw continuous wave CO2 laser. Corrosion tests were conducted in room temperature 10% FeCl3 (immersion weight loss) and steam autoclave. The corrosion rates showed a 10 to 100-fold improvement for the laser processed material. There appeared to be a direct relationship between corrosion rate and type of microstructure transformation induced by the laser processing
