Some unconventional ICF approaches with heavy-ion beams

  • 1. Fribourg Univ. (Switzerland). Inst. de Physique

Description

Using a heavy-ion beam of 10 GeV energy allows to create a few cm long plasma channel in a frozen D-T mixture. It is shown that generating currents of a few MA along such a plasma channel, initially having solid-state electron density, could lead to a dynamical Z-pinch accompanied by thermonuclear ignition with substantial energy gains.
