Evaluation of radioactivity analysis of the water coolant in transfer channel and interim storage for spent fuel facilities

Description

Currently, there are 245 spent nuclear fuel stored with wet-type in transfer channel-interim storage for spent fuel (TC-ISFSF) facilities. The storage pool until now only used to temporarily store spent nuclear fuel from G.A. Siwabessy Multipurpose Reactor, while the transfer channels used to transfer spent nuclear fuel and other irradiated material from RMI and RPI (PT. Inuki). Pool and channels filled with water coolant which also serves to hold radionuclides from spent nuclear fuel to avoid detachment of radio nuclides into the environment. Water quality is maintained by operating system of purification / water purification with ion exchange resins. Sampling of the water coolant in both the pool and the canal is done by operating the water purification system of ponds and canals. Analysis of the radioactivity of water ponds and canals performed using gamma spectrometry (Multy channel analyzer). From the analysis of the radioactivity of water channels and pools at 2015 obtained radio nuclides Cs-137, the concentration was 4,00x10-7 μCi/ml but still lower than the Limit of Permitted Highest Radioactivity Content / LPHRC (7x102 Bq/L or 1,891x10-5 μCi/ml). For radionuclide with a half-life is very short, Sb-124 and J-133 detected are lower than LPHRC but there are also higher than LPHRC (7x102 Bq/L or 1,891x10-5 μCi/ml). The highest concentrations of Sb-124 is 7,26x10-5 μCi/ml, whereas for J-133 is 5,47x10-4 μCi/ml. The contaminants can then be captured by using a water purification system. The results of the analysis did not show any contamination of the activation of corrosion products such as Zn-65, Co-60 and Mn-54. Based on the evaluation and analysis of the level of contamination can be inferred that the TC-ISFSF operation of the facility in good condition and safely in accordance with safety standards.
