A passive environmental neutron spectrometer using SSNTD

  • 1. Birmingham Univ. (UK). Dept. of Physics

Description

A design is proposed for a Passive Environmental Neutron Spectrometer using SSNTD. Fast neutrons produce (n,α) reactions in a 10B converter, and the α-particles detected in LR115. By interposing an absorber of a certain thickness between converter and detector, the detector is effectively shielded from neutrons below a certain threshold energy. By using a set of absorbers, a set of threshold detectors can be created. This device is assessed by computer modelling, and also experimentally. Preliminary results suggest success may be possible, although several problems still remain. (author)
