Shining brightness from deep valleys

For a technical part the surface forms the interface with its environment. Engineers have underestimated the importance of surface finishing. Protection from corrosion and friction were the main considerations for a long time, but now the possibility of functional improvement by deliberate alteration of the surface is coming to the fore. A key aspect here is the study of the tree-dimensional, submicroscopic structure. The objectives of surfaces research and technology are: improved durability, optimum performance, and efficient use of materials, with minimum environmental pollution. (orig.)
