The clinical significance of the levels of plasma calcitonin gene-related peptide and endothelin in patients with mitral stenosis
Description
Objective: To evaluate the value of the levels of plasma calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and endothelin (ET) before and after percutaneous balloon mitral valvuloplasty (PBMV) in patients with mitral stenosis (MS). Methods: The levels of plasma CGRP and ET before and after PBMV in 30 patients with MS were measured by radioimmunoassay, and were compared with the controls. Results: The results showed that the level of CGRP before PBMV in MS patients was significantly lower than that of the controls (P<0.001), and increased after PBMV (P<0.001). The variability of the level of ET before and after PBMV in MS patients was reverse to CGRP (P<0.001). There was significant negative correlation between the level of CGRP and the level of ET (r=-0.427, P<0.01). Conclusions: It is suggested that the level of CGRP and the level of ET may play a role in the pathophysiological process of MS, and the level of CGRP and the level of ET before and after PBMV may be a good parameter for evaluating the severity of MS and effect of PBMV
