This article examines the information emerging from the 'Earth Summit' of 1992. The topics of the article include utilities as a source of greenhouse gases, impact to utilities of the response of the federal and state governments to the summit. The author discussed the effect of climate change on utility operations including electricity demand, existing utility capacity, and siting decisions, and potential utility options for responding to climate change including increased end-use efficiency, more efficient generation, greater use of non-combustion technologies, fuel switching, electric substitution and carbon dioxide sequestration
