Description
Recently, experiment was conducted to know the available core excess reactivity in NIRR-1 after over 11 years of operation and was found to have depleted to 2.95 mk. Also, full power experiment conducted revealed that the reactor was only able to operate for 1 hour 40 minutes at full power before critical rod position reached the rod limiting position set at 220 mm and the reactor neutron flux began to decrease. It was observed that the reactor could not be operated continuously for 5 hours during a day to meet the demand of users. Hence, the need for beryllium shim addition. (author)
