A relativistic quark model
Description
The variational method is used to derive a relativistic quark model for mesons. The only input is the hamiltonian of quantum chromodynamics augmented by a term which produces instantaneous, linear, scalar confinement. Integral equations are developed which follow from a general variational ansatz which includes transverse gluon degrees of freedom and thus yields all the correct perturbative physics up to order αs4. The model is applied to the heavy quark systems of canti c and banti b where excellent agreement with experiment is obtained. (orig.)
