A long counter as a secondary standard for neutron fluence and its rate

  • 1. Ceskoslovensky Metrologicky Ustav, Bratislava (Czechoslovakia)

Description

A long counter (LC) designed and constructed according to the De Pangher and Mc Kibben model is described, as is the measurement of its basic metrological characteristics. Calibration of the LC involves determination of the count rate per unit fluence rate in dependence on the energy of neutrons impinging on the front face of the LC, further determination of the effective centre of the LC and determination of the contribution of scattered neutrons; this contribution was deduced from 'shadow cone' measurements. 241AmBe and 252Cf neutron sources were used in the measurements.
