Improved analytical procedures for 210Po in biological specimens

Description
A simple and safe method suitable for simultaneous and multiple determinations of 210Po in hamster bone and soft tissues has been developed and used routinely at this laboratory. The procedure involves wet ashing of the tissue with concentrated nitic (HNO3) and hydrochloric (HCl) acids and 30% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) at 500C and complete dissolution in 2M HNO3. An aliquot of this solution is gelled with a liquid scintillation cocktail and counted in a liquid scintillation spectrometer. The lower limit of detection of 210Po by this method is 16 pCi for a 20-min counting time. The average chemical recovery is 97 +- 3%
