Description

The decay of the giant dipole resonance in the reaction 58Ni(γ,n)57Ni has been investigated. Neutrons from this reaction have been detected by means of a stilbene-based scintillation counter. The relative populations of low-lying levels of the final nucleus 57Ni have been determined by analyzing the energy of recoil protons for excitation energies between 17.2 and 19.0 MeV. The observed populations are inconsistent with predictions based on the model of semidirect decay and on statistical theory
