Extractive spectrophotometric determination of uranium in the plutonium oxide obtained during the reprocessing of FBTR fuels in the CORAL facility

  • 1. Reprocessing Group, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam (India)

Description

A simple extractive spectrophotometric method is developed for the determination of uranium in the plutonium oxide samples. Uranium is purified from plutonium by selectively extracting U from nitric acid in the presence of ferrous for converting all oxidation states of Pu to Pu(III). It has been found that ferrous introduces a constant bias and the same is corrected during the determination of uranium in the presence of plutonium. The molar extinction coefficient for uranium was found to be 21648 liter mol-1 cm-1 and relative standard deviation was found to be 5.9 %. (author)
