Symmetric charge transfer in uranium ion-atom collisions

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute, Ibaraki-ken (Japan)

Description

Symmetric charge transfer cross section of uranium was calculated under consideration of reaction paths. In the charge transfer reaction a d3/2 electron in the U atom transfers into the d-electron site of U+ (4 I9/2) ion. The J value of the U atom produced after the reaction is 6,5,4 or 3. At impact energy below several tens eV, only resonant charge transfer in which the product atom is ground state (J=6) takes place. Therefore, the cross section is very small (4510-15 cm2) compared with that considered so far. In the energy range of 100-1000 eV the cross section increases with the impact energy because near resonant charge transfer in which an s-electron in the U atom transfers into the d-electron site of U+ ion. Charge transfer cross section between U+ in the first excited state (289 cm-1) and U in the ground state was also obtained. (author)
