Magnetic susceptibility of liquid binary gallium alloys

Description

The investigation concerned the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility of molten alloys of six binary systems of gallium with zinc, indium, thallium, tin, lead and bismuth upon the temperature and the concentration. Experimental values of the magnetic susceptibility of pure molten metals were compared to their values calculated according to a free electron model and according to an almost free electron model. The values of the susceptibility agree satisfactorily with the values calculated according to the free electron model, except for gallium, zinc, thallium. The addition of common metals to molten gallium rapidly minimizes the deviations from the free electron model. The calculated ratio of the effective mass to the mass of a free electron is closs to unity for all the metals under investigation, except for zinc and thallium
