Physiological aspects of iodide excess in relation to radiation protection

Description

The consequences to the thyroid of the accidental release of radioactive iodine, particularly 131I, from nuclear power plants are reviewed. The effects of radioiodine on the thyroid are outlined and the effectiveness of treatment of the affected population with stable iodide as well as the duration of blockade and side effects are reviewed in some detail. Possible mechanisms for iodide blockade are given
