Direct observation of charmed-particle pairs produced in 340 GeV/c negative-pion interactions in an emulsion chamber

Description
Among secondaries of 4323 interactions produced in an emulsion chamber exposed to a 340 GeV/c negative ion beam of CERN-SPS, 4 pairs of charmed particles were detected. The mean lifetime of D0(D0-bar) and the inclusive production cross-section of a charmed particle pair by 340 GeV/c pions were evaluated as (3.1sub(-1.6)sup(+ 2.0)) x 10-13 sec and 44 +- 22 μb.
