High abundance of metastable helium atoms for diagnostic application

  • 1. Physics Department, University of Puerto Rico, San Juan 00931-3343 (Puerto Rico)

Description

A new Penning type of discharge has been used to generate high-density metastables. The highest metastable density of 3.5 x 1016 m-3 is obtained at a static gas pressure of 500 mTorr. At 0.5 mTorr gas pressure discharge, we achieve a very high abundance of metastables N(21S)/N(He) up to 10-3. These metastable densities obtained are high enough to be used in diagnosing the internal electric field inside the plasma source based on laser-induced fluorescence techniques
