Measurements of quiescent prominence spectra: Ca+ lambdalambda8542, 8498 and He lambda4471, Ti+ lambda4468

High-dispersion line-profile measurements in quiescent prominences are presented for two observing programs: Ca+ lambdalambda8542, 8498 and He lambda4471, Ti+ lambda4468. Continuing the approach established in previous work, the Ca+ and He profiles are found to be accurately synthesized by our two-component model, wherein each component is characterized by a temperature, a Gaussian microturbulence distribution, and a constant source function. The Ti+ lines are too weak to distinguish different models. From the Ca+ data, the infrared line source function for the principal low-temperature region (subscript c) is shown to be approximately constant for tau/sub Oc/(lambda8542)< or approx. =4, with the value S/sub c/(lambda8542)=5.0 x 104 ergs cm-2 s-1 sr-1 A-1. This result disagrees substantially with the predictions of previous, detailed, Ca+ excitation equilibrium calculations and provides a new point of comparison with theory. The results of a simplified analysis, hovever, show the measured source function to be consistent with generally accepted T/sub e/, n/sub e/ values, about 7000 K and 1011 cm-3, respectively. The integrated intensity ration =0.048 +- 0.022 (angular brackets denote averages over all prominence measurements) is sufficiently close to the value provisionally adopted in some of our earlier prominence programs that only very minor corrections need be made to the E(He lambda4471) values reported there. In combination with previous (He D3, Ca+ lambda8542) measurements, the He, Ti+ data lead to the values =6620 +- 1810 K and =5.1 +- 1.4 km s-1 for the low-temperature material. For the high-temperature region (subscript h), the present results give =11 +- 4 km s-1 and =20 +- 4 km s-1
