High-precision measurement of the hyperfine structure of the 620-cm-1 metastable atomic level of 235U by laser-rf double resonance

  • 1. Argonne National Lab., IL

Description

The laser-rf double-resonance technique has been used to determine the zero-field hyperfine intervals in the 620-cm-1 atomic level of 235U to an absolute precision of 1 kHz. Analysis of the results leads to the values A = -68.3457 +- 0.0010 MHz and B = 40.110 +- 0.030 MHz, uncorrected for second-order effects. Examination of the hyperfine structure of the metastable level at 8119 cm-1 by laser fluorescence strongly suggests that the same technique could be used to give high-precision results for all metastable levels up to at least 10000 cm-1
