The cost-effectiveness of solar energy. The right technology applied in the right place

  • 1. Stichting ter bevordering van Grootschalige Exploitatie van Zonne-energie GEZEN, Groningen (Netherlands)

Description

Thermal solar energy generators use concentrating solar power (CSP), a technology in which mirrors focus solar radiation onto a boiler, which then feeds heat to a conventional power generator. A desert area equal to that of France would be enough to supply the whole world with solar energy. Thermal storage makes it possible for a solar power station to supply electricity 24 hours a day. If the world were to resume investing in CSP, solar electricity could become as cheap as nuclear energy within 10 to 15 years
