Fabrication of radioactive solid waste compactor

Description

A compactor for the eminent volume reduction of radioactive solid waste by using a compressing technique have been fabricated. The objective of this study is to develop a compressing device to reduce the volume of a drum which is contained by a inflammable solid waste from nuclear power plants and intermediate low level solid waste from nuclear examination reactors and nuclear fuel examination facilities and a compactor to reduce the volume of a specially designed drum which is contained by a high level solid waste by using a manipulator and an air cylinder into the hot cell. In the results of this study, the factor of volume reduction was found respectively one-fifth for a compressing device and one-tenth for compactor. The result obtained from this study will be used to store with facility a radioactive solid waste by using Radioactive Solid Waste Compactor in case of Korea whose government does not yet decide a policy of radioactive waste disposal as well as to reduce eminently quantities of solid waste canister
