Description

The Liptovska kotlina Basin belongs to the most neotectonically active regions within the Western Carpathians. Morphologically expressive faceted slopes on the contact with adjacent mountains, travertines and fluvial system in terrace developement is the part of the evidence of its neotectonic activity. Based on the Vah River terraces analysis, the rate of erosion of the Vah River was calculated. Both, the total erosion (Et) since the terrace bedrock formation until the recent floodplain bedrock formation and the partial erosion (Ep) between two subsequential terraces' bedrocks formation were calculated. Totally 13 terrace levels were identified based on the summary of the previous investigations, the drillings analysis and field research, from which 11 levels has its own terrace bedrock. The rate of erosion of the Vah River changed strongly with the most marked rate during the upper part of the middle Pleistocene. This can be considered as the evidence of increased uplift rate of the Liptovska kotlina Basin during the upper part of the middle Pleistocene (Riss). (authors)
