A protection method of mammals from ionizing radiation by hypoxic hypoxia applicable in cases of both local and total irradiation. In order to maintain the main physiological functions of animals in the dangerous zone, the gas mixture causing hypoxic hypoxia is fed to the respiratory organs of animals via autonomous means, e.g. anesthesia or protective mask
