Gamma-irradiation of human peripheral lymphocytes: effects of low and prolonged irradiation on sister chromatid exchange induction

  • 1. Medical Research Council, Edinburgh (UK)

Description

In contrast to the suggestion advanced by Serra et al. (1978), the results from an in vitro experiment indicate that sister chromatid exchange cannot be used to monitor exposure of individuals to chronic low levels of ionising radiation. No increase in the frequency of sister chromatid exchange was observed in PHA-stimulated and unstimulated human lymphocytes irradiated for five hours with a cobalt-60 source (6.1 mrad/hour at 1 m).
