Description

The nonlinear theory of the Weibel-type electromagnetic instability developed in a relativistic electron beam-plasma system (REB), is presented and compared with the results of linear and quasilinear theories. The basic equations for a nonlinear REB-plasma interaction and the dispersion relation for the electromagnetic instability are done. The mechanism of the energy transfer from REB to the plasma is studied, finally obtaining the expressions for the growth rate, the kinetic energy changes, the energy transfer time and the characteristic stopping length. The nonlinear saturation mechanism of the Weibel-type instability is also discussed and the saturation value of Γ (k, vc) is deduced. (Author)
