Metastable He+(2Ssub(1/2)) yield of a hot filament arc discharge ion source in a magnetic field

Description

The metastable He+ (2Ssub(1/2)) yield obtained by direct extraction from a hot filament arc discharge ion source in a magnetic field is studied. The dependence of the metastable fraction of the extracted beam on various ion source parameters is determined. Typical metastable fractions obtained were 0.04% and the maximum metastable fraction was about 0.1%. (orig.)
