Method of processing spent fuel elements
Description
Purpose: To improve the integrity of the spent fuel rods. Constitution: After disposing a pressurizing and heating vessel in a fuel pool and placing a spent fuel assembly comprising fuel cladding tubes made of zirconium alloys, water of the inside is discharged. Since the temperature of the cladding tube is increased due to γ-heat generated from pellets and cladding tubes, the temperature is increased to such a level that hydrogen in the cladding tube material is solid-solubilized into zirconium by using an auxiliary temperature controlling device. Then, pressurizing gas is fed into the vessel and pressurized to an identical level with that of the gases in the cladding tube so that no stresses are generated due to pressure difference. Then, elongation at break of the cladding tube embrittled being suffered from neutron damages during use and the integrity can be improved. (Sekiya, K.)
