Description
The response of the Heavy Nuclei Experiment (HNE) instrument on HEAO-3 was predicted using the exact Mott cross section for the Production of secondary electrons in close collisions. Energy deposition in the ion chambers and Cherenkov counter response were calculated considering the transport of secondary electrons through the instrument. The results were compared to those calculated for Fe scaled according to a Z2 response. The instrument response was predicted for energies from 0.6 to 10.0 GeV/nucleon, and for representative nuclei from Fe to U. The deviation from a Z2 dependence was found to be significant compared to the expected charge resolution of the instrument
