Description

The patent concerns an installation for the storage above ground level of heat-generating materials such as radioactive waste from nuclear facilities. The installation is a block of concrete containing steel-lined bore holes into which the waste is deposited. The cooling of the waste is provided by a system of ducts which allow a natural circulation path for a fluid to pass between an external air-cooled condenser and evaporation ducting sections (which run alongside the bore holes). The fluid may be water/steam under sub-atmospheric conditions, but must be able to change phases at temperatures which do not deleteriously affect the concrete. (U.K.)
