Lung scanning and clearance of inhaled radiogold (198Au) particles in three patients with microlithiasis

Description
Lung clearance of inhaled radiogold (198Au) particles was evaluated in three siblings with alveolar microlithiasis. A significantly slower clearance was found in such patients as compared with normal controls. The pattern of serial scans clearly indicated the lung mucociliary function to be impaired. It is suggested that slowing of the clearance may represent a pathogenetic factor capable of favouring the formation of alveolar microliths. (orig.)
Abstract (German)
Bei drei Geschwistern mit alveolarer Mikrolithiase wurde die Radiogold-Clearance der Lunge nach Inhalation der Radiogoldteilchen szintigraphisch bestimmt. Wir stellten eine signifikant langsamere Clearance, verglichen mit normalen Probanden, fest. Wiederholte szintigraphische Untersuchungen ergaben eine einndeutige Beeintraechtigung der Flimmerepithelfunktion in der Lunge. Es ist anzunehmen, dass eine verlangsamte Clearance als pathogener Faktor beguenstigend auf die Bildung alveolarer Mikrolithe wirkt. (orig.)Additional details
