Production of events with two or three muons in the final state during the interaction on nucleons of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos of the CERN narrow band beam with a maximum energy of 200 GeV

Description

A study was made of the production of dimuons and trimuons in the neutrino interactions using the data of the CDHS (CERN-Dortmund-Heidelberg-Saclay Cooperation) experiment taken in the CERN narrow band beam. The analysis of the quick results (since the statistics are weak) leads to significant conclusions on these events: 1) the c quark fragmentation function is approximately flat, 2) the production of heavy leptons, if this exists, only represents a very small part of the charged currents (10-4 approximately). 3) the pair production of charmed quarks can explain some of the dimuons of same sign, the greater part of these events coming from the semi leptonic disintegration of pions and kaons (π→μν,K → μν) produced in the hadronic jet. 4) any other process (for instance the production of b quarks) is very weak (< 10-3 of the charged currents)

Abstract (French)

On etudie la production de dimuons et de trimuons dans les interactions neutrinos a partir des donnees de l'experience CDHS (Collaboration CERN-Dortmund-Heidelberg-Saclay) prise en faisceau a bande etroite du CERN. L'analyse des resultats, rapide car la statistique est faible amene a des conclusions importantes sur ces evenements: 1) la fonction de fragmentation du quark c est approximativement plate. 2) la production de leptons lourds, si elle existe, ne represente qu'une partie tres faible des courants charges (10-4 environ). 3) la production en paire de quarks charmes peut expliquer une partie des dimuons de meme signe, la plus grande partie de ces evenements venant de la desintegration semi leptonique de pions et de kaons (π→μν, K → μν) produits dans la gerbe hadronique. 4) tout autre processus (production de b quarks par exemple) est tres faible (< 10-3 des courants charges)
