Milestone in physics: The German electron synchrotron 25 years old
Description
The West German accelerator centre DESY in Hamburg, one of the thirteen large-scale research facilities, has set itself ambitious objectives ever since it was founded 25 years ago. Its machines have always been among the most efficient in the world, and at present PETRA holds the record among the electron-positron storage rings. This is why DESY has attracted scientists from all over the world and has played a part in almost all the major discoveries in particle physics. The first part of the article describes DESY's most outstanding successes, and the second explains the basic ideas of modern accelerators. (orig.)

Das bundesdeutsche Beschleunigerzentrum DESY in Hamburg, eine der 13 Grossforschungseinrichtungen, hat sich seit seiner Gruendung vor 25 Jahren ehrgeizige Ziele gesetzt. Seine Maschinen zaehlten stets zu den leistungsfaehigsten der Welt, PETRA haelt gegenwaertig den Energierekord unter den Elektron-Positron-Speicherringen. Dadurch zog DESY Wissenschaftler aus aller Welt an und war bei fast allen grossen Entdeckungen der Teilchenphysik beteiligt. Der erste Teil des Beitrags schildert die wichtigsten Erfolge von DESY, der zweite erklaert die Grundideen der modernen Beschleuniger. (orig.)Additional details
