Reactions of imides with samarium (2) iodide

Description
Interaction of imides and lactams with SmI2 was investigated. One of carbonyl groups of imide fragment of N-phenhlphdthalimide is reduced by SmI2 to CHOH or CH2 group at ∼230 deg C. The reaction pathway depends mainly on reagent ratio and the sequence of reagent addition to the reaction mixture. Under similar conditions both CO groups of N-acetylcaprolactam are reduced by Sm2, whereas CO group of ε-caprolactam is not reduced by SmI2. 8 refs
