Colour confinement in electron-positron two-jet annihilations

Description
We consider colour confinement in electron-positron annihilation into a quark-antiquark pair. The subsequent hadronisation of this pair is described in terms of an S-matrix approach to qanti q → n pions. Angular momentum conservation is treated in detail. For a wide class (but not all) of the confinement amplitudes considered, a 1 + cos2 THETA jet distribution results: this is seen to be dependent not only upon the qanti q production mechanism but also on the angular momentum properties of the confining qanti q interaction. The model suggests a new definition of the jet axis. Fragmentation (jet) and central (background) regions are treated on an equal footing. (orig.)
