Le reacteur nucleaire faisant l'objet de l'invention est caracterise en ce qu'au moins une partie de ses paquets de cartouches sont fractionnes dans la direction de circulation du caloporteur en au moins deux zones dans les cartouches desquelles sont places des combustibles differents. Dans la zone a temperature du caloporteur plus basse le combustible a une grande densite des noyaux lourds ou une plus grande densite des isotopes fissiles
