Description

A heavy ion test storage ring (TSR) is under construction at the Tandem-Post-accelerator combination of the Max-Planck-Institute in Heidelberg. The ring will store ions up to a magnetic rigidity of 1.5 Tm corresponding to about 30 MeV/u for a charge to mass ratio of 0.5. The TSR is specially designed to investigate the electron cooling of heavy ions. The availability of a combination of partially and fully stripped heavy ions together with a cold intense electron bath (I=1.0 A typically) of adjustable relative energy will provide unique possibilities for atomic physics investigations. The general layout of the TSR as well as the status of the major components is described. First injected beams are expected for late 1987
