Zirconia ceramic article toughened with SIC whiskers

Description

A ceramic composite is described characterized by improved fracture toughness comprising a matrix phase consisting essentially of tetragonal ZrO/sub 2/ and a ZrO/sub 2/ stabilizer selected from the group consisting of MgO, CaO, Y/sub 2/O/sub 3/, and oxides of rare earth elements from the group: La, Ce Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, Er and Yb and a whisker reinforcement phase constituting 5-20 volume percent of the composite and consisting of silicon carbide whiskers, the whiskers having a monocrystalline structure, a diameter in the range of 0.5-3 μm, a length in the range of 10-30 μm, and an aspect ratio not exceeding about 20, the composite exhibiting a fracture toughness (K/sub IC/) at 250C at least 1.25 times the fracture toughness of the matrix phase when free of the whisker reinforcement phase
