Regulatory aspects of NPP safety in Lithuania

The functions of safety and control of nuclear facilities as well as supervision of accounting nuclear materials shall be performed by the State Nuclear Power safety Inspectorate of the Republic of Lithuania (VATESI). The supervision and control of nuclear facilities shall also be carries out within the framework of their respective competence, by other state institutions as well as by local authorities in the territories of their jurisdiction. Licenses for the activities referred to design, construction and reconstruction of nuclear facilities shall be issued by VATESI with the approval of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment a local authority whose territory is within the sanitary protection zone of nuclear facility. An urgent need is recognised for support on integrated international assistance program for improvement of Ignalina safety program.
