Spectroscopic analysis of HZ Herculis

  • 1. Dominion Astrophysical Observatory

Description

Measurements from 49 spectra of HZ Her are presented. Emission lines of N iii, He ii, and N v are shown to be associated with the neutron star, together with a weak continuum. Velocities, spectrophotometry, and light curves of the primary suggest that it has an off-axis hot spot. Calculations of profile distortions for a simple model of this nature fit the spectroscopic observations. The spectroscopic results yield masses of 2.0 M0 and 1.0 M0 for the primary and X-ray sources, respectively. Subject headings: binaries - neutron stars - stars, individual - X-ray sources
