Research of neutron radiography at the University of Michigan

  • 1. Japan Atomic Energy Research Inst., Tokai, Ibaraki (Japan). Tokai Research Establishment

Description

There is Phoenix Memorial Laboratory (PML) in the north campus of University of Michigan, and in the Laboratory, the Ford Nuclear Reactor (FNR) is installed. The FNR is a light water-moderated and cooled swimming pool type research reactor of 2 MW thermal output, and is utilized for neutron beam experiment, radioactivation analysis, the production of radioisotopes, the irradiation on materials and so on. The research on the development and application of neutron radiography apparatuses has been carried out actively by using the FNR. The neutron radiography facilities at the FNR consist of the vertical experimental hole facility having the position of imaging at the reactor top and the horizontal experimental hole facility on the first floor of the reactor room. These facilities are explained. As to the research on the diffusion of water in epoxy resin adhesive, the objective of the research, the materials used for the experiment, the experimental method and procedure and the experimental results are reported. This research is an applied research using neutron radiography having the prospect of development. (K.I.)
