Separation of stopping events of charged particles in a gas target with the aid of semiconductor detectors

  • 1. Moscow Engineering Physics Inst., Moscow

Description

This paper discusses a method of separating stopping events of charged particles in gas-filled targets. The method is based on the determination of the energy of incoming particles with the aid of two semiconductor detectors placed inside the target. The authors show that in the case of a 0.6-g/cm2 thick target and an efficiency of about50% of separating stopping events inside the gas, the fraction of stopping events recorded in the walls of the chamber amounts to about7%. This is better than in other methods by one order of magnitude. The method is of particular interest in experiments in which the sensitive gas must be kept very pure
