Theory of dynamical symmetry breaking
Description
We present an elementary introduction to the theory of dynamical symmetry breaking in relativistic field theories. After explanation of the effective potential method, two-dimensional models are discussed as examples of dynamical symmetry breaking in renormalizable field theories. The essential mechanism causing the dynamical breaking is explained in the review of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The same mechanism is found to be responsible for the dynamical symmetry breaking in asymptotically free field theories like QCD. The whole article is devoted to the generalization of Nambu's idea to renormalizable field theories. (author) 55 refs
