The position of nuclear energy and renewable energies in IEA scenarios

In the IEA report 'World Energy Outlook - 2014' various scenarios for a future energy mix have been considered. Only the scenarios called 'High Nuclear' and '450' have the capacity of decreasing CO₂ emissions due to electricity production when comparing with 2012 figures. In both scenarios nuclear energy and renewable energies are growing and cooperate strongly. In the High Nuclear scenario the share of nuclear energy is 14% of the mix, representing 767 GW in 2040. This nuclear capacity can be reached through a construction rate of 18 GW a year which is very reasonable when compared with the 34 GW/y rate that was obtained in the eighties at the world scale.
