Reactor safety and radiation protection in Germany - a status report

Description

Reactor safety and radiation protection have been tasks pursued with tenacity by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Reactor Safety and Nature Conservation (Bundesumweltministerium) since its establishment almost ten years ago. Earlier and current priority items on the task list are (1) safeguarding safe operation of nuclear reactors in Germany through constant maintenance and retrofitting activities, (2) keeping abreast with high radiation protection standards, (3) contributing to improving nuclear power plant safety worldwide, especially in Eastern Europe, (4) paving the way for the next nuclear power plant generation (EPR) and its enhanced engineered safety design, (5) continuing the implementation of the German nuclear waste management concept. Abstract (German)

Reaktorsicherheit und Strahlenschutz sind Daueraufgaben, an denen das demnaechst 10 Jahre alte Bundesumweltministerium seit seiner Gruendung beharrlich arbeitet. Schwerpunkte bilden dabei 1. die Gewaehrleistung des sicheren Betriebes der Kernreaktoren in Deutschland durch Bestandspflege, 2. die Fortentwicklung des Strahlenschutzes auf hohem Niveau, 3. die Erhoehung der Sicherheit von Kernkraftwerken weltweit, insbesondere in Osteuropa, 4. die Schaffung der Option fuer eine zukuenftige Kernkraftwerksgeneration (CEPR) mit weiterentwickelten Sicherheitseigenschaften und 5. die weitere Umsetzung des deutschen Entsorgungskonzepts.
