Investigations on the optimal use of nuclear fuel in the once-through fuel cycle
Description
The report describes experiences which were gathered in the optimization of the nuclear fuel charge used in the pressurized water reactors in the GDR. These experiences are based on the application of neutron-physical computation methods and optimization methods. The order of magnitude of the attainable savings is estimated. It is shown, on the basis of further estimations, that a long-term development of nuclear energetics on the basis of the exclusive use of pressurized water reactors will not be possible in view of the limited supply of low-priced uranium
