Description
KAERI started VHTR materials R and D in 2006 as part of its role in supporting the development of key technology for the nuclear research and development program. Over the past ten years, research has been conducted on various materials including Alloy 617 for an IHX and hot gas duct, 9Cr-1Mo for an RPV, graphite for a reflector and the support structures in the core region, Cf/C and SiCf/SiC composites for a control rod, and Fe-Si, SiC, HastelloyR, and other novel metals for an SI process reactor. Mechanical properties including creep and fatigue, environmental effects, and irradiation behaviors have also been heavily evaluated as part of the materials research. Most of the results have been contributed to the GEN-IV VHTR materials collaboration. (authors)
